METAMORPHOSIS SYMPOSIUM LOGO & BROCHURE DESIGN SEATTLE STUDY CLUB

The client's request for a symposium theme that visually combined the idea of 'art and architecture' in a 'metamorphic' way was a challenge that we grew to love.

We began by designing the symposium logo - representing the 'metamorphic' transition using the butterfly image symbolically in an architectural form on one side of the logo and in an organic brush illustration on the other side.

The brochure was designed to be delivered in an architectural tube - the designed label giving a hint of what was inside - by showing a cocoon illustration on an architectural grid and intriguingly promised, 'Plans Inside'. The oversized brochure was rolled inside and was designed to mimic architectural plans, complete with custom genuine architectural binding and velum paper.
While over-viewing the symposium information the reader was transported through a 'Metamorphosis' of his own. The information oriented pages were architectural in nature and opaque - using a handwritten architectural font interspersed with architectural cornice elements which were the ground for the brush images on the transparent pages above them which followed the story of a butterfly going through its metamorphic transformation.

The transparent UV pages were strategically placed so that one could see - for example - the artistically brushed cocoon illustration on the UV paper - lying on the 'architectural leaf cornice' on the information page below. Appropriately, the last page of the brochure showed the butterfly in its fully formed glory - as the logo. This was a very successful design for the symposium that members remembered for years.
